Jewellery making classes, workshops, and experiences just outside the capital, Scotland
SUMMER WED 10-Week Beginner Masterclass
Over 10 weeks, learn different skills, including designing, to make an item of jewellery.
All the details...
Explore the art of silver jewellery design and making with Scottish Silverworks. This is perfect for a beginner who wants to delve into jewellery making differently, with more focus and time to hone specific skills and also someone more skilled if they want to explore design too, and work on finessing. WHAT DOES THIS WORKSHOP INVOLVE AND WHAT'S INCLUDED? In the 10-week workshop, you'll be introduced to the basics of metalwork, with demos and written examples throughout. Weeks 1-6, learn and practice various techniques of cutting, patterning, shaping and joining metal using soldering flames and cold connections like riveting. Texturing and polishing metal is a key element so you can finish your jewellery in style. We explore the design process over these inital weeks via small take home research leading you to make a silver ring, brooch, necklace, or other small item. By week 6 we will have a design of your own that you will then create using your new skills in the remaining weeks. You will have access to base metal (typically copper or brass) to learn the skills and up to 7g of silver included as part of the course. Upon designing, you may wish to purchase more silver, but we will also help you design the piece with the existing budget in mind. Each class will be one and a half hours long. By week 6 we will have the skills together for designing the item you wish to create. WONDERING IF THIS IS FOR YOU? Sometimes a one-session class leaves you wanting more knowledge and experience. Workshops are where you will be able to really explore jewellery making a little more in-depth and have time to work on just one skill at a time to start to perfect your techniques and eye for detail and finesse. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE: Places are limited to 4 to maintain an intimate and focused environment, however, do get in touch if you would like a larger party and we can do our best to accommodate you! Attendees must be over the age of 14 years old. They must be attending with an adult who is also partaking in the workshop. Good hand-eye coordination is important as is reasonable hand dexterity. The space is currently not wheelchair accessible but we are working on this, please be in touch directly if you would like to discuss access. What to wear: Closed-toe shoes are essential. Comfortable clothing is advised and if you need glasses and something to hold your hair back, please bring them! Bringing an apron is optional but can be good to protect clothing.
